External Battery for Squeezebox Boom 

I wanted this great unity of the terrace, where the use of WiFi, but there is no electrical connection. I came with an external battery configuration. 

First a warning: This will void the warranty and technical support will not help. Six strictly alone, and if we are not careful you can easily FRY polarity of electronics in its heyday. 

It takes a kind of April 12 volt amp hour gel battery, a “smart” (three phases) of the battery and maintainer of a link from the battery to the boom. The batteries are in electronics stores and security, and outdoor / garden stores or online. Amazon has many of these and here is one: XB5L-B Xtreme Volts AGM sealed battery

More of a boombox

I like like it but I m a computer dummie and need help setting it up. It needs a battery back up so it doesnt loose the fuctions when you unplug to move it and should have a handle..Logetech should offer a rough finish to approve appearance when used as a boombox…the shiny finish looks rich as long as it stays in one location…also two of the main radio stations I want to stream are not on this unit I have to get help loading them as I said I am a computer dummie…Reliablity unknown as I have only had it about a month….So far I highly recomend the Squeezebox I researched many hours and for the price { I paid $217 total on amazon } I recommend it highly.

Near perfect Wifi radio player.

I won’t go into to much detail here about the Logitech Squeezebox Boom, many others have detailed it to death. I will say this is currently the best Wifi player available, for it’s size, features, sound quality. It is not a plug and play device, be warned it does take time and patience to set up, the directions are less than complete. It took me about 20-30 minutes to get up and running. After setup I have no regrets about purchasing this product. I paid $150+ $7 for shipping from Electronics [...]. 

The sound quality is fantastic! I listen to it daily. The auto dimmer display is a nice feature also. 

The only negative issue is from time to time it does not immediately pick up my Wifi router’s signal when first turned on, which causes the device to want to revert back to setup mode. To correct this, I simply shut off the device and wait a few minutes and turn it back on. I have not yet had to reset the device. I’ve owned the device for a few months. 

I highley recommend the Squeezebox Boom.

Great for internet radio. I bought 2 of them. One for bedroom and one for living room. If I want to just use the logictech’s site and my router is connected to internet, I don’t have to have a computer on. It’s [...]… and you can get shoutcast/pandora/ and lots of free apps and control everything from just the boom. 

The other option is use your computer and download free server program from logictech and then you also view all the stuff on your computers in addition to internet radio stuff. I can control the booms from my computer or remote or from unit itself. 

The boom as good stereo sound. Mostly I listen to pandora because it’s commerical free and I pick jazz station or rock or do a search like “beatles” or “sinatra” or anything else and it will find stations that match that. Very cool. I can sync both booms up or each boom can play different stuff.

Five-minute integration with Squeezebox system

We installed a Logitech Squeezebox system last autumn because the combination of features, performance, and price all worked for us. We are using the Duet (a master controller, combined with a receiver attached to our home theater receiver), and an extra receiver attached to Z-2300 speakers for our living room. The system is served by Squeezebox Server running on a ReadyNAS Duo network attached storage server.

Good: we can run Squeezebox in the family room and living room. Not so good: those are the only two locations where we can hear music. Logitech has stopped selling the receiver separately, so simply adding another receiver/speaker combo is not easily done. And if we did, it means a pile of separate components needing to be hauled and connected where we want them. 

This unit takes care of that for us. While the Boom is self-contained, with full controls and wireless connectivity, it can also be controlled from the SB Controller (which I find preferable). Other reviewers comment at length on sound quality; I’ll just say that the sound is more than adequate for an outdoor deck. Construction is solid. It can use a handle and a more-secure cradle for the small remote. 

But here’s the thing: it took a grand total of five minutes from the time the packing materials were removed to getting first sound from this box, connecting to my network. That time included inputting a network password and waiting for a firmware update, which happened automatically. The Boom found the Squeezebox Server and became part of the network without any fussing or additional configuration. 

(In fact, though, it’s useful to install SB Server in order to configure the menus and displays on the Boom. I imagine this could also be done from mysqueezebox.) 

This all-in-one product costs less than configuring a Receiver (if you can get it) and speaker system, and it’s very convenient. I recommend it.

Fantastic Network Music Player

I just received The Squeezbox Boom and I’m very impressed. The unit looks great and the build seems very sturdy and well made – a solid piece of equipment. The setup was very easy and the unit’s ability to access internet music along with all of the music on my PC is very good. It’s obvious to me that a network music system is where everything in home audio is headed. Meaning that all of your music is either stored on your home PC in high quality formats (320 kbps or higher) or you access the internet – Pandora, Sirius, etc. I have an extensive mp3 collection on my home computer and I have subscriptions with Pandora and Sirius Radio, both work perfectly on the Boom. The current downside of internet music is the low stream quality, usually streaming at 128 kbps. My mp3 collection is all 320 kbps or lossless – and I can notice the difference. 

The challenge for a portable unit like the Squeezbox Boom is the sound quality from the system itself. You can only expect so much from 3″ speakers regardless of the software or electronics and the engineers at Logitech understand this so they added an output for a subwoofer (good thinking guys). Again, the sound from the Boom is not bad, but it sounds as well as 3″ speakers can sound. I enjoy listening to Rock and Alternative music and I have a high end sound system in my home, so it’s really not fair to compare the Boom to expensive floor standing speakers. I bought the Boom to listen to music in the garage or outside on the deck – and it works just fine for those applications. Since I would like to get the best possible sound quality – I’ve just ordered a small subwoofer for the unit (a Yamaha YST-FSW050BL2) and I’ll see if that makes a difference. I imagine it will. 

Overall, I’m very satisfied with the Squeezbox Boom – it does what it does well. 

Update: Wow! I just received the Yamaha subwoofer and it makes a hugh difference in the audio quality. The Squeezbox now sounds like a high-end stereo system. The subwoofer adds quite a bit to the overall size of the system, but it’s well worth it if you are serious about the quality of the music. This thing now rocks! 

Second Update: Ok, this is the first time I’ve ever gone back twice to update a review. But since I added the subwoofer to the Boom, I just can’t praise it enough. I had to go back and change my rating from 4 stars to 5 stars – it’s now that good. With the added subwoofer I find that I’m listening to this system more than my home stereo system, because it’s movable and it sounds fantastic. When I first received the unit, I liked it, but again you can only get so much music from 3″ speakers. Now…it sounds fantastic for a portable music player and it works with my wireless internet connection and mp3 collection perfectly. I am very, very happy with this purchase. 

If the Logitech Boom product manager is reading these reviews – nice job and I’d go ask for a raise.

It’s Complicated

Let me say that this is my second internet radio. I’ve had it about two weeks. I had a Grace radio but returned it due to poor sound quality from its one, non-stereo speaker. The Logitech Squeezebox Boom provides surprisingly good sound. I specifically wanted a unit I could plug into my nice home stereo. This sounds so great that most of the time I don’t bother to hook it up to my home system. Granted, if you like to blast loud music it probably doesn’t have enough ooomph. However, for most home situations where you just want some nice background music, this does the job with a very rich bass and flexibility for you to adjust your sound profile how you like it. 

Now, why do I say it’s complicated? 
1. It is not something you just pull out of the box and play music. Almost, but not quite. You do need to run it through its paces. Mine found my wireless network without any hassles and the initial setup on the Boom is pretty straightforward. However, I found that downloading the more detailed instructions from the “Product Support” heading off the Logitech website was more helpful than the little booklet that came with the Boom. 2. To get the most out of the unit you need to spend some time on your computer. I found myself running back and forth between the Boom and my computer for more advanced set up including setting up a “Squeezenetwork” account. You don’t have to do this but it allows for more features. For instance, you can sync it to play your iTunes library. You can also save favorite radio stations via the “Applications” feature. Your computer DOES need to be running with the Squeezebox Server running. 
3. Now here’s where it starts to get complicated. You can either run the Squeezebox Boom connected to your home wireless network without being connected to your computer OR you can run it through the extra software you’ve downloaded. I have found that my “Favorites” lists don’t cross over and I have to try to remember where I have them stored. Sometimes it seems to connect arbitrarily to one or the other (wireless or home computer) and I have to turn it off to start again. 
4. Another “Complication” is the wide variety of internet radio sources available. You may have Pandora, Live 365, SkyFM, RadioTime, and many other accounts available on the radio at once. It seems that some stations appear on more than one “network”. I have not found a good resource online to list ALL the various stations you can access, although Live365 does have a fairly good website. I would like to see this available from Logitech soon. My advice is to save a station as a Favorite the instant you find it because it can be difficult to navigate back to it again if you don’t remember how you got there. 
5. The display is OK and once you understand the method of rolling and clicking through all the menus you can find your way around but it is kind of like a spoke of one-way streets you must travel down and back again before going off in another direction. Not sure how this could be made more user-friendly but I believe with time it will become more intuitive for me. 

The Logitech Squeezebox Boom is a great piece of equipment and I highly recommend it. It may be helpful for you to understand that it is quite a complex undertaking to get it set up and find all your favorite stations. On the other hand, it’s a wonderful complication to have virtually unlimited radio stations available to you!

Perseverance

I have had my Logitech Squeezebox for about a month now. The first 2 or 3 weeks were very frustrating as I struggled to overcome the setup errors and constant disconnections. I made about 4 tech support calls, all of which were of no help. I thought that I should return the thing, but I so badly wanted it to work that I persevered through. I finally got the radio working without the disconnects and the need to repeatedly go through the setup process. I am having a lot of fun with it now. There seems to be a gazillion broadcasts from around the world to explore. 

One mystery was the alarm. Again, I repeatedly tried to setup the alarm to various different internet radio stations, only to have it fall back to the default beeper each morning. Again, I made the tech support call – no help. Over and over I double checked the settings; seemingly all good. I finally changed the alarm time by 1 minute and now it has been working for the past week. Strange. 

If you want a simple on & off radio source, this is not for you. You don’t have to be a techie to setup & navigate this radio, but it is certainly not turn key and be prepared to have your patience tested. If you really, really want what this has to offer, then I recommend it. I am certainly enjoying it, now.

Dandy!

I have two Squeezebox booms, and I love them both! One is in my office/den, and the other is in the living room. This is really a high-quality device. Set-up was easy, and I had both booms up and running in just a few minutes. I don’t use the alarm function, and I don’t have a big music collection to play, so I can’t speak to how well those functions work on the Boom. I use my Booms to listen to Internet radio (there are thousands of stations available) and to stream Pandora, Live365, etc., and for those things the Boom works very well. Sound quality is excellent for such a relatively small device. I recommend it highly!

Just what I wanted

I was looking for a radio that could play some channels from Denmark and Germany. These stream crystal clear on this radio. I end up using Pandora, Last.fm, and MyMp3Musiclocker more and these are great to have on this machine. The interface is very user friendly. Setup takes a bit of time, but you only have to do that once. 

I love the device and use it daily.
